Don’t Collect Bad Empty Cartridges
There are many companies that are in the business of refilling or remanufacturing printer, copier and fax cartridges. Many of the companies in that business are high quality, world class manufacturers. However once they have refilled, recharged or remanufactured a particular cartridge, then that same cartridge is rendered non- remanufacturable for a second time. Of course, if the cartridge cannot be remanufactured it has no value when empty. DO NOT COLLECT CARTRIDGES THAT HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY REMANUFACTURED. You are probably asking yourself “How will I know which ones have been remanufactured?” There are many technical ways to discover cartridges that have been previously remanufactured but for now we’ll concentrate on the easy ways that will work for you most of the time. If you collect empty cartridges that are still in the original box you will see a manufacturer’s name other than the original manufacturer if the cartridge has been refilled or recharged. AN ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER’S NAME COULD BE HEWLETT-PACKARD (HP), XEROX, CANON, SHARP, LEXMARK, PANASONIC or many others.
IF THE CARTRIDGE BOX SAYS THAT THE CARTRIDGE HAS BEEN MANUFACTURED BY A COMPANY OTHER THAN THE MANUFACTURER OF THE MACHINE FOR WHICH THE CARTRIDGE IS INTENDED THEN YOU CAN BE REASONABLY CERTAIN THAT THE CARTRIDGE IS A REMANUFACTURED CARTRIDGE. YOU SHOULD NOT COLLECT THAT CARTRIDGE.
Are You Confused Yet?
If the cartridge box says something like this: “QUILL BRAND PREMIUM CARTRIDGE-FOR USE IN HP2100, 2100N, 2100TN” then you can be assured that you are dealing with a previously remanufactured cartridge that has no value when empty. In fact, almost all remanufacturer’s print the words “REMANUFACTURED” or “FOR USE IN…” on their boxes and on their cartridges. MANY REMANUFACTURING COMPANIES WILL PUT THEIR NAME, PHONE NUMBER, ETC. DIRECTLY ON THE CARTRIDGE. In this case, it will be easy for you to discover that this cartridge is a remanufactured cartridge.
ALL THAT BEING SAID, YOU WILL PROBABLY MAKE A FEW MISTAKES IN THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CARTRIDGE COLLECTION BUSINESS, THAT’S UNAVOIDABLE. BUT YOU WILL QUICKLY BECOME AN EMPTY CARTRIDGE COLLECTION PROFESSIONAL.

Fundraising Groups
THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR EMPTY CARTRIDGE COLLECTION FUNDRAISING EFFORTS IS OBVIOUS. YOU KEEP ALL THE MONEY. Since we are not a fundraising promotions company you may have to do some things such as creating your own prize structure for your top producers. You may need to create some advertising. THERE ARE SO MANY UNIQUE FUNDRAISING PROJECTS, YOU WILL PROBABLY BE BETTER SERVED CREATING YOUR OWN ADVERTISING EXPLAINING YOUR UNIQUE NEEDS.
A couple things that companies and individuals may want to know when they donate their cartridges to you:
1. What are you doing with the money you receive from recycling their cartridges?
2. Can they get a receipt from you for their empty cartridges? Many times this is not important especially if you solicit empty or new cartridge donations from government agencies (Police Depts., City, County and State Offices, etc.) or others without tax considerations. If you are a bonafide IRS recognized non-profit or charitable organization (501©3 or other) issuing a receipt should not be a problem.
Something very powerful is working in your favor when it comes to collecting empty and new printer, copier and fax cartridges. These cartridges are non-biodegradable and can ultimately end up in landfills. Ever increasing waste management requirements make it more expensive every year for landfills to operate. SOME FUNDRAISING GROUPS HAVE ASKED THEIR CITY MAYOR’S OFFICE, SANITATION DEPT. SUPERVISOR, OR OTHER WELL KNOWN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO ENDORSE THEIR EMPTY CARTRIDGE COLLECTION EFFORTS AS GOOD FOR THE CITY OR COMMUNITY. It is generally agreed that keeping these empty cartridges out of our landfills is good for everyone involved. You will find that most government agencies have no policy regarding the disposition of empty toner cartridges. A SHORT ENDORSEMENT LETTER OR MEMO FROM A WELL RESPECTED OFFICIAL MAY BE YOUR GREEN LIGHT TO COLLECTING LARGE AMOUNTS OF EMPTY CARTRIDGES, ESPECIALLY IF YOUR FUNDRAISING PROJECT IS COMMUNITY ORIENTED.
